Day 18 Franz Josef

Today we cycle to Franz Josef home of one of the glaciers in the Southern Alps. Weatherman is predicting rain so we leave prepared with rain  jacket. Our first stop is in Ross, an old gold mining town, for some water etc. The day is warming up as we travel south and the clouds have disappeared leaving only a bright sun. We travel through forests on mostly rolling terrain passing lakes and rivers on the way. We get a glimpse of Mt. Cook early in the journey. We stop briefly in Pukekura to visit The Bushman's Centre and their display of possum furs. We make good time and are soon at our lunch stop in Hari Hari . After lunch we head out to Franz Josef. I have a close encounter with a passing car that actually brushes my elbow..  never been that close before but all is well ! We arrive in Franz Josef around 4...  a quaint little town made up of restaurants, accommodations and tour operators. Helicopters fly continually up to the glacier for tours. There is also glacier hot pools .
We meet downstairs for the 10 minute walk to the restaurant and are surprised to be picked up in a Humvee stretch limo !  Another Great meal . probably gaining weight even with all the biking. We detour a bit on the way home for a visit to see glow worms. All in all a pretty special day !
