Day 14-15 Christchurch

We spend a full day touring Christchurch. First it is off to Hagley Park and the Botanic gardens. We walk through the gardens on our way to city center. In the city we board a city tour tram for some commentary on the sites we are passing. It is get on /off as you please so we jump off to see Cathedral Square where the original Anglican Cathedral is located and badly damaged from the earthquake. We then visit the transitional Cathedral built as a temporary location for church life but it is proven so popular it may be there a while. It is nicknamed the cardboard cathedral since the roof trusses are cardboard tubes.. We see the re:start shopping area built entirely from shipping containers. We stop at Quake City for a in depth account of the Earthquakes . Very moving ! We stop at a craft brewery, many in NZ, for supper on our way back to the motel.
Today we meet up with our bike tour at noon. We meet one of our leaders who takes us to lunch and provides details of our next 10 days. After lunch we get our rental bikes fitted and go for a short ride around Hagley Park and then a van tour of Christchurch with Dave, our leader providing commentary.. We have a nice meal as a group at a nearby restuarant then it is back to bed. Tomorrow we bike to Arthur's Pass with some hills to conquer. We are a little nervous since we have not been on a bike since September.
