Day 38 Taupo

Today we drive north along Lake Taupo , to the town of Taupo. Another town on the shores of a beautiful lake... only this time it is the largest lake in New Zealand. We head to the Spa Thermal Park to dip our feet into a hot spring running into the river. From the parking lot we find the trail to Huka Falls, the most photographed waterfall in NZ. Over 200,000 liters of water pass through this narrow point in the river every second. After taking our photos we decide to walk further down the river until we reach a bridge that allows us to cross to the other side. We find a mountain biking trail that heads back down the other side of the river. A nice hike through the woods leads us back to Huka Falls. We tour Taupo and have our flat whites at a local cafe then it is back to Turangi. On the way we stumble unto Craters of the moon , an area where you can walk on a boardwalk over bubbling craters and steaming vents.
